How Does Dsl Work

Being just an ordinary student or a local businessman, you might be wondering how does DSL work? Before knowing how does DSL work, what is first a DSL? Digital Subscriber Line or more known as DSL to many  is a connection that lets you connect to the internet without disrupting your telephone line, and it is faster than a dial-up connection. There are different kinds of DSL that you can choose from depending on your needs that vary mostly on internet speed and distance covered.

So how does DSL work? DSL works like a telephone line you have at home or at the office. To easily understand how DSL does work, you must first understand how a telephone works. When two people are talking over the phone, the sender or the one talking are sending analog signals that go through a copper wire where the receiver or the one listening receives the analog signals. For professionals, they call it Plain Old Telephone Service or POTS.  A DSL and a telephone line can use the same copper wire without interfering with each other. The copper wire used has the capacity to carry or transmit a big range of frequencies so it still has a space for the frequencies of an internet connection known as DSL. The reason behind that is because a normal telephone conversation does not occupy a big portion of the range of frequencies of a copper wire, so there is still an extensive space for DSL. In addition to that, a normal telephone conversation sends and receives analog signals while a DSL sends and receives digital data.

How does DSL work? Without any complicated technical terms, it can be summarized and answered by it works like a telephone. It uses the same copper wire as the telephone, but it can be used both at the same time without interfering with each other for a normal telephone conversation occupies a little space of the large bandwidth provided by the copper wire.  

However, a DSL has two more additional pieces of equipment needed to be able to be connected to the internet. First is the Modulator Demodulator or Modem that will be attached or connected to the phone line and to the computer. Second is the DSL Access Multiplexer that will be on the service provider that allows them to receive requests from the customers and send them back through the internet.
